Kayak Paddle Sizing Guide
Using the right-sized paddle for your kayak is important when you're out on the water. Check out our guide below that helps you figure out the best size for your paddle.
No matter which paddle you get, if it's too short, you might accidentally bump your hands on the sides of the kayak. But if it's too long, it could make your shoulders tired and make your kayak zig-zag as you paddle in the water.
Choosing the right size paddle is more of an art than science. You have to think about how long it should be and what kind of paddle matches your style and kayaking discpline. Also, you want to think about the shape of the paddle part and how it connects to the handle.
The right paddle size is as important as the perfect fit for your PFD or finding the perfect kayak for your on-the-water adventure!
What paddle length should I get?
First things first, the primary factors to consider when determining your kayak paddle length is your height as well as the width of the kayak.
If you’re unsure of the width of your boat, measure your kayak at its widest point. As a reference, here are the widths of typical kayak types:
Recreational Kayaks
Usually, rec kayaks have a width of 26" to 30". These boats are generally 6-12 feet long. They can be either sit on top or sit inside. Interested in which style is right for you?
Whitewater Kayaks
The width of the whitewater kayaks is not as critical of a factor as the paddlers height is. These boats are typically around 7-11 feet long. See the whitewater specific chart below.
Fishing Kayaks
Fishing kayaks are generally the widest kayaks, having a width from 30" to 40". These boats are typically 11-14 feet long.
Touring Kayaks
Touring kayaks usually have a width from 22" to 25". These boats are typically 12-15 feet long.
